NRL Round 24 – Punt Club

NRL Round 24

August 26, 2021

Second last round of the home and away season (mainly home for the QLD teams…) where Melbourne, Penrith and Manly will be very happy to get through the 80 minutes without injuries, especially to their key players. Wrap them in cotton wool or just go out and play? Here’s how I would have Turbo, Cleary and Papenhuyzen suited up if I coached them…

Ladbrokes have their usual $2 lines for Thursday’s clash and Friday’s games, with the season nearing an end, we better make the most of these $2 lines before they’re gone!

Thursday

Newcastle Knights ($2) VS Gold Coast Titans ($1.82) – Sunshine Coast Stadium

Big clash for the Titans and their finals hopes, they will be up for this, but in these big games it is discipline that usually wins out. Something the Titans really struggle with. The Knights are not a team of mine but they can get the job done here.

Suggested Bet – Newcastle Knights +1.5 @ $2

Friday

New Zealand Warriors ($2.80) VS Canberra Raiders ($1.45) – BB Print Stadium, Mackay

Like the Titans, this shapes as a season defining game for the Raiders and their chances of securing 8th position. They have been abysmal for most of the season and they look very short in this. The Warriors season is all but over but they have tried in recent outings and they are decent underdogs.

Suggested Bet – New Zealand Warriors +6.5 @ $2

Sydney Roosters ($4.10) VS South Sydney Rabbitohs ($1.24) – Suncorp Stadium

The Bunnies won’t be completely wound up for this one but they pack far too much firepower for an injury ravaged and struggling Roosters side.

Suggested Bet – South Sydney Rabbitohs -12.5 @ $2

Saturday

St George Illawarra Dragons ($1.70) VS North Queensland Cowboys ($2.15) – Browne Park, Rockhampton

We should get a dry fast deck and perfect conditions for footy. Whilst most games look like being an arm wrestle with less 6 agains and more ‘semi final’ type footy, this will be a free flowing open game. With nothing to play for you would hope they at least throw the pill around and entertain the Rocky crowd, and those watching on the tele. Cheering points.

Suggested Bet – Total Match Points Over 53.5 @ $1.90

Cronulla Sharks ($1.50) VS Brisbane Broncos ($2.60) – Suncorp Stadium

The Sharks currently cling to 8th spot and their chances of playing finals football will be largely enhanced if they can win well here. Brisbane will provide stiff opposition, they have improved from the poor performances early in the season. With more to play for, I favour the Sharks.

Suggested bet – Cronulla Sharks -5.5 @ $1.90

Melbourne Storm ($1.07) VS Parramatta Eels ($8.50) – Suncorp Stadium

Melbourne are building nicely towards another grand final appearance. The Eels on the other hand are dead set gone. The Storm have bigger fish to fry over the next month or so but they can cover the line.

Suggested Bet – Melbourne Storm -22.5 @ $1.90

Sunday

Manly Sea Eagles ($1.02) VS Canterbury Bulldogs ($15) – Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

Turbo looks set to play, and if he does line up, I’ll be surprised if the Dogs can keep Manly below 50. This is a terrible Bulldogs side and they lose even more players with Adam Elliot succumbing to toilet shenanigans… Bet up on Manly to cover (as long as Turbo plays).

Suggested Bet – Manly Sea Eagles -30.5 @ $1.90

Penrith Panthers ($1.03) VS Wests Tigers ($12.50) – Moreton Daily Stadium, Redcliffe

Penny are a different team with the world’s best player, Nathan Cleary, steering the ship. The Tigers were awful last week, and have been for large portions of this season. Penny to start hitting their straps again and will make a mess of the Tigers.

Suggested Bet – Penrith Panthers -30 @ $1.90
