Round 8 Preview
A Friday night doubleheader kicks off proceedings this round and what a round it’s shaping up to be! Will the top 8 become any clearer when the Dees and Saints meet on Sunday? We’re nearly 2 months in now and still plenty of questions left to be answered, as you would expect!
Let’s get into it, shall we…
Port ($1.62) vs Bulldogs ($2.35)
- Dogs back in the winner’s circle
- Bont being rested
- Port won well in tough conditions in Cairns
- Will that knock them around?
- Dogs 71 point winners when last met in the Prelim Final
Separated by 1 win just outside the top 8 on the ladder and both will be hungry for a much needed win. Port were tenacious last week in tough conditions in Cairns but you have to wonder how much that win might have taken out of them. The Dogs on the other hand got a confidence boost when bashing up on poor Essendon and although Bont is being rested, i think the Dogs can win.
Fremantle ($1.10) vs Nth Melb ($7)
- Freo flying but hit by Covid
- North battling
- Dockers back to Perth a big plus
The Dockers are the talk of the town for a couple of reasons; firstly, they are flying. Secondly, they have been struck by Covid and look set to miss coaching staff as well as a few players at this stage. Will this help the Kangas stay in touch and possibly give them a chance? No.
Tigers ($1.42) vs Pies ($2.90)
- Top 8 battle at a packed G
- Dusty & Cotchin back!
- Tigers beat up on West Coast last week
- Jack Ginnivan can grab a headline…
Richmond get the inclusion of two Brownlow medallists in Cotchin & Dusty, look out Pies! The Pies have historically gotten up for this game and whilst Ginnivan steals all the headlines, there’s a bit to like about the Pies the last few weeks but you would have to think Richmond will be improved with the return of two stars. This will be some spectacle at a packed out G.
Swans ($1.17) vs Suns ($5)
- Swans can rejoin the top 4 with a win
- Buddy kicked 6 in a losing team
- Suns showed some promise but 3 straight losses now
The Suns have shown some promise this season but that has meant little so far with 3 consecutive losses now. The Swans were humbled by the Lions last week where Buddy managed to kick 6 goals in a losing team. The SCG is a hard place for travelling teams to win but with a bit more polish in front of goal, the Suns can challenge one of the better defences in the comp. This will be much closer than the market suggests. The Suns have won 2 of the last 3 encounters between these two. Value!
GWS ($1.95) vs Cats ($1.87)
- GWS beware – Geelong on the back of a loss
- Cats run down by a flying Dockers
- Can GWS score enough points to go with the Cats?
There’s been a bit of money for the Cats and I expect that to continue. Geelong looked set for victory last week against the Dockers before they had the life sucked out of them and went on to lose. This is a terrible scenario for GWS coming up against a Cats team fresh off a loss. Whilst Toby Greene and Stephen Coniglio were very good last week for the Giants, I can’t see them scoring enough points to be competitive here. Geelong’s attack to dominate.
Lions ($1.01) vs Eagles ($19)
- Things go from bad to worse for West Coast
- Lions at the Gabba
Winx odds for Brisbane to beat West Coast and barring an act of God it looks a foregone conclusion. I’m not one to launch into long lines…Take the Lions to score more than 121.5 points.
Essendon ($2.30) vs Hawthorn ($1.64)
- Long time rivals do battle
- Ben Rutten under immense pressure
- Hawks playing ok
- Things might get worse for the Bombers
Essendon were comprehensively beaten again last week and it’s fair to say the pressure on Ben Rutten will only intensify if they are to go over in this. Whilst Essendon have been the biggest disappointment of 2022, an argument can be made to say that the Hawks have been the most surprising. Hawthorn have covered the line in 5 of 7 games this season and they can continue that great record here.
Melbourne ($1.33) vs St Kilda ($3.30)
- Can the Saints be the team to knock off Melbourne?
- Would have been top pick prior to their loss last week
- Dees dug deep to win battling Covid outs
Last round’s loss to Port in sloppy conditions in Cairns might just be what the doctor ordered for the Saints. Melbourne dug deep and showed their class when tested by the Hawks and Covid, even though they were missing key players they found a way to win – something good teams do. This will be a cracking clash but expect Melbourne to prove too classy over the concluding stages.
Carlton ($1.30) vs Adelaide ($3.50)
- Crucial clash for Carlton’s top 4 chances
- 50 point winners last week
- Crows right in this
Adelaide are a pretty frustrating team, so far this season they have taken Freo to the sword in round 1, lost by only four to Essendon, and also beaten Richmond and the Bulldogs. They have also had their you know what’s handed to them too! But that is to be expected of a young side and if they turn up, they’re right in this!
Good luck & good punting!
